Image Comics presents 'Rat Bastards'...

As some know I have a series being released next year through the lovely folks at Image Comics. Kurtis Wiebe and I developed the series over the summer of 2009, and had the pleasure of pitching it to Eric Stephenson, the publisher of Image Comics. Eric liked what he saw and, with much thanks, put us to work. Please visit our the series website for a sneak peak of the first issue, as well as some concept sketches for the series.

Blue Beetle #7

My piece for the 2nd Annual Comic Art Show at Happy Harbor Comics in Edmonton on November 19th. The theme for this year's show is comic book covers! I dreamt up a hypothetical issue 7 to Steve Ditko's amazing Blue Beetle series for Charlton Comics.

CJSW Funding Drive Album Package...

And the package. Oh type-setting, I'll never understand nor appreciate you. I like the layout of the songs and bands on the back cover, that I can get behind. If you're very clever you may notice a little narrative that runs throughout the images. Only if you're clever though. Like a 12 year old graffiting his/her name, address and phone number to the side of a police car.

CJSW Funding Drive Album...

Alright, had to wait a while before posting this. CJSW, my favorite radio station, contacted me and asked if I would illustrate and design their annual funding drive album this year. How could I refuse? They wanted something old and retro looking, which is a stretch for me...as if. I really like the image that appears on the tray, with the record player.

Blue Beetle & Madmen's Fleeter...

Popped over to Chris Samnee's blog this morning and realized I need to be a better illustrator. The guy's work is amazing! So I drummed this bugger up in a couple hours and am feeling pretty dang good. I love the Blue Beetle. I'm going to shoot to do a couple of these a week.

More sketchbook fun...

Just to keep myself active between comic book pages. I'm loving this run of Tim Burton Batman villains. I guess the Schumacher versions are next. Wait, no, I forgot Max Shreck!

Sketchbook Warm-up...

So, being out of town for a few days I realized I needed to warm-up before getting back to comic book form. Here is what I came up with. I really like how stylized the work is becoming.

CFCR 90.5 fm 'Living Stereo'...

I was asked by the fine folks at Saskatoon's Community Radio Station, CFCR 90.5 fm, to design a logo for their upcoming funding drive. The logo appears on t-shirts, magnets, and the CFCR website here:

http://www.cfcr.ca/

For more info on how to get your hands on a t-shirt or magnet, visit the website and pledge, pledge, pledge.

Even while totally overwhelmed with work, I still have time for little gems like this one.

Suicide Blonde FFWD...

Jeepers, am I ever behind on posting. I'm currently working on a comic book for Image Comics, and losing track of the hours of the day/week/month. This was a quick job I did for FFWD. And the article written by Dr. Drew Anderson (I'm not sure of his medical credentials):

Buzzcocks FFWD Weekly Cover...

Okay, so this update has been long overdue. I'm currently working on a couple different comic books, which are bogarting my time. Anyway. This is a cover I did last week for FFWD featuring UK Punk Rockers, Buzzcocks. I'm really happy with how this came out.

Madman & Atomics Pin-up...

I met Mike Allred at the 2009 Calgary Comic Expo. In 2010, just after seeing him (and his lovely and talented wife, Laura) at the Seattle Comic Con, he asked me to contribute a Madman and Atomics Pin-up to a giant size special that is due to be released (tentatively) in December. This work was a real pleasure to do, as Mike and Laura have been huge influences on me since I first started this illustration trek.

Vehicle Magazine Cover...

Well, the lovely Tyler and Hilary Jenkins asked me to contribute a cover to Vehicle Magazine. Totally open-ended illustrations like this can be extremely challenging. So, I put together the wrap around cover seen above.

Sketchbook...

More drawing just to stay active. I don't like these sketchbook pages as much as the last, but that's life, man.

the Rat Bastards...

Okay, so I figure it's time to show a little glimpse of the project I have been working on with writer, Kurtis Wiebe. We call it the 'Rat Bastards'. During the Emerald City Comic Con, in Seattle, we passed out several proposal books to publishers and other creators. I've received a lot of very positive feedback on this work from other illustrators like Mike Allred and Gilbert Hernandez, and several top comic book publishers. Kurtis and I are both waiting in anticipation for someone to pick this series up. I've posted the cover and one interior.

schizophrenia illustration...

An illustration I did for my pal, Kyle Van Der Velden, for a social work project he has been working on. I'm not sure I dig the overall composition, but regardless...

FFWD spot: 'Alberta's Watchdog should be leashed'...

Alright, the first new illustration of April. This illustration accompanies an article written by Trevor Scott Howell. As it turns out, gimp masks are fun to draw. Maybe I'll make a career of that. Maybe. You can find the article here:

Fun drawing...

Don't seem to take the time and just draw for fun since getting busy. Well, I decided to change that last week. Hazzuh!

FFWD spot: 'Getting to know you'...

This was a wild one. FFWD needed an illustration done quickly before going to print Wednesday. I started this illustration at 10:30am yesterday, and finished by 3PM (that's including a 30 minute lunch break). I've never pushed myself like that before, you know, until I coloured 10 storyboards later that night. What a day.

And the article by Drew Anderson (about a friendly cat named Mark Hopkins):
